Staff Spotlight: Tim Oestreich, Commercial Service Representative

What is your role at A.F. Smith?

I am the Commercial Service Representative. One of my main responsibilities is to provide customer service to our commercial customers, which means lots of phone calls, meetings and emails. Scheduling, walk-throughs, writing up proposals and assigning jobs to our technicians are some of my other main priorities.

How long have you worked at A.F. Smith?

I’ve been here almost a year.

What does your average day look like?

That’s your first mistake – there’s no average day! Particularly right now since I’m still somewhat learning the ropes, especially when it comes to getting used to our computer system. Basically, every day I’m keeping up with both past, current and future bids. I’m also off-site most days at anywhere from one to six site locations. I try to schedule a couple days each week where I’m solely in the office in order to stay on top of everything.

What led you to your career at A.F. Smith?

I was approached by A.F. Smith to help out with a project at a local school, for which I was recommended by a mutual friend. Soon after, this position became available and they reached out again.

What does being on the A.F. Smith team mean to you?

Everyone has been very helpful, which is very comforting as I adjust to this new role. As a staff, we all “gel,” and all of us are focused on getting the job done right.

What do you want people to know about A.F. Smith?

During the most recent ice storm, there was a customer who wanted us to repair something in a cheap way, and none of us here do things haphazardly and unsafely. We do it the right way, or we don’t do it.

Why should customers choose A.F. Smith?

We truly care about customer safety. We always make sure electrical systems are up to code. We are customer oriented and people oriented.

Who have been your strongest influences in life?

My father, who was an electrical engineer for Ford. His motto was to do it right or don’t do it, which I also believe.

What are you most proud of accomplishing, personally and/or professionally?

I’ve done a lot of interesting things. I’ve even done some acting in movies and TV shows. I will say that electrical work has been one of my most satisfying roles. You get to get the work done, sit back, and say, “I did that”. I can drive around the area and point to buildings that I’ve worked on, which is pretty cool.

If you can, describe A.F. Smith Electric in three words or less.

I can’t count - ha! Teamwork, accountability, attitude.

Anything you'd like to add that I didn't ask?

I recently became a grandfather. My son is also in the electrical trade as a 4th year apprentice.
